Midwifery Funded in Alberta

The rumors are true. I've gotten phone calls. I've heard the news. I've read online reports but I didn't believe it until I called the Director of the Albertan Midwives. She confirmed it!

Read this article.

As of April 2009 all women who choose to have a midwife can do so without the worry of financial strain. I'm so happy! We've rallied and we've carried on after women have gone to the government for years and it's finally happened.

If you're looking for a midwife for a current or future pregnancy there is lots of relevant information in the right sidebar.

I know this is an old post, however, I want a midwife more than anything and can't get one because everyone is full up (I called four days before I was due to have my period). There are still many barriers to getting midwifery care. Though I am very glad the Province of Alberta is funding midwives, I am not wealthy, but would have pinched my pennies and delayed my pregnancy to have one. I have heard that many women go and get a midwife because it is free now even though they know they don't want a natural birth. A natural birth is something I have always wanted and, given all the stories of doctors in Calgary, it will be a struggle for me to have it without a midwife.

I don't know what the solution is, time I guess. So many young people I talk to still don't know what a midwife is--I would like to see more advocacy to get universities to develop programs to train midwives and more education in school to encourage this as a career option.
